Weekly Bridge Quiz

Goren Bridge

Bob Jones

  1. Neither vulnerable, as South, you hold:
    ♠ A K 9 8 5
    10 8 2
    Q 6 4 2
    ♣ 2
Right-hand opponent opens 2, weak. What call would you make?
    ANSWER
Somebody has to have a good hand for their bid. When they are weak, that somebody should be you. Pass.
  2. North-South vulnerable, as South, you hold::
    ♠ Q J 6 2
    A 8 6 3
    J 9 7 3
    ♣ 2
Partner opens one club and right-hand opponent passes. What call would you make?
    ANSWER
Charles Goren would have bid 1 bidding “up the line.” That’s fine. Many modern players prefer to bypass the diamond suit and show their major. These players must bid 1
  3. East-West vulnerable, as South, you hold:
    ♠ K Q J 9
    Q J 6 2
    A J
    ♣ 10 9 5

    South West North East
    1NT Pass 2♣ Pass
    ?

    Which major would you bid?

    ANSWER
It doesn’t really matter. We would bid 2♠, our better major. Should partner continue with 3NT, we’ll bid 4 next, knowing that he has four of them
  4. Both vulnerable, as South, you hold:
    ♠ Q 9 7 4
    K Q 10 8
    K
    ♣ K 10 9 5

    North East South West
    1 Pass 1 Pass
    1NT Pass ?

    What call would you make?

    ANSWER
Partner doesn’t have four spades or he would have bid 1♠. Don’t tell the opponents anything more about your hand. Bid 3NT.
  5. North-South vulnerable, as South, you hold:
    ♠ K J
    A K 7 5 4
    A K J 10 2
    ♣ 4
Partner opens 3♣ and right-hand opponent passes. What call would you make?
    ANSWER
Pass or 3NT might work better, but we like 3. Forcing, of course.
  6. East-West vulnerable, as South, you hold:
    ♠ K 10 9 6 3

    K Q 10 3
    ♣ K 7 5 2

    South West North East
    1♠ 2 Dbl 4
    ?

    *Negative double
    What call would you make?

    ANSWER
If partner will read a 4NT bid as “bid your best minor,” then that’s the bid. If you’re not sure of that, just pass. It is too dangerous to guess yourself.
