Opening Lead: ♣J
Peter Weichsel is one of the USA’s leading players and is a member of the bridge Hall of Fame. He was South in today’s deal.
East’s 3NT bid was completely reasonable. We imagine he would have been disappointed with the dummy. Weichsel would have easily defeated this contract, but he didn’t know that, so he preferred to take his chances in a game of his own. The ♣J lead held the first trick and the club continuation went to the queen and king. East shifted to a low spade. Weichsel won this with the king and continued with the ♠Q. East took his ace and returned the suit. Weichsel won and ran all of his spades, leaving this position:

The defense could not have discarded to better advantage. Weichsel led a diamond to dummy’s ace and led a heart back to his queen. The A drew the outstanding hearts and the 7 was the game-going trick. Nicely played!
