Bidding the blues

The Sutherlins redouble gleefully. “An old-fashioned redouble! We have extras and want to send the message. The opponents are outgunned and probably do not have an eight-card fit.”

Similarly, Cohen produces the blue card to show extras and announce that the opponents are in trouble. “This should not be SOS.”

Ditto Korbel: “East may have made a mistake and we might be able to punish him for it. Second choice is a 2 preference, but then I would feel committed to bidding 3 if I got another chance.”

Redouble by Falk. “It is tempting to bid 2 here because of the matchpoint angle, but partner is going to get tapped in spades, and hearts are probably not breaking. I prefer to tell partner I have a decent hand and perhaps he will be able to place the contract. I can always bid 3 later.”

Sanborn redoubles first to show support and a good hand. “I’ll decide about hearts later.”

Meyers takes a matchpoint preference to 2. “I could be making 3 and only 3 or 4 .”

2 by Lee. “There’s an argument that this shows mildly invitational values. Whatever it is, we have to offer 2 as a matchpoint sweet spot because it’s likely to outscore or break even with diamonds.”

Boehm, too. “Assuming I would have raised with a tripleton, this shows a good doubleton. It’s matchpoints.”

Rigal, 2: “I’m planning to raise diamonds at my next turn. I don’t think we have a penalty on our way, but I admit I could be wrong.”

Stack passes. “We are happy with the 10 HCP and four trumps, so let us hope everyone passes. We can gain information on the opponents’ hands and what to do on the following round by just listening at this point.”

Colchamiro, pass. “Partner might have only three diamonds, and West might be getting ready to pass, so I’m not going to redouble.”

Hampson takes a waiting approach, too. “I will double a black suit unless partner bids in front of me.”

Robinson passes. “LHO is going to bid a black suit, so do I want to pass and maybe bid 3 , or redouble and have to bid 3 , since redouble would promise a rebid? I’ll pass and see what partner does over a black-suit bid.”
