Two men who learned bridge and played together as youngsters in Chicago stormed into the lead after the first final session of the Bean Red Ribbon Pairs and survived a below-average last round to win the event by about 10 matchpoints on a top of 38.
Paul Hattis of Newton MA and Jim Orleans of Northbrook IL were in 25th place after Friday’s two qualifying sessions, but they had a 67.41% game in the first final session to take a slim lead going into the evening session. They scored 65.18% in the final session despite collecting only 29.5 out of 76 matchpoints on the final round.
Second place went to Richard Wimberley of Evans GA and Jesse Chao of San Francisco CA.
Hattis is a professor at Tufts Medical School in Boston. Orleans is a bond trader and investor. Orleans’ father taught him and Hattis to play bridge when they were young. Neither plays a lot, but they try to make it to a couple of tournaments a year.
