U.S. Women, Seniors Reach World Championship Finals

Trailing by 14 IMPs with four boards to go in the Venice Cup (Women’s World Team Championship), USA2 came through in dramatic fashion against a strong Dutch team, scoring 30 IMPs to turn a 165–151 deficit into a 181–165 victory. The Americans (Disa Eythorsdottir–Janice Seamon-Molson, Jenny Wolpert–Jill Levin, Jill Meyers–Migry Zur Campanile and npc Sue Picus) face a seasoned English team (Sally Brock, Fiona Brown, Heather Dhondy, Nevena Senior, Nicola Smith, Susan Stockdale, npc Jeremy Dhondy, coach David Burn). England easily beat China to reach the final.

In the d’Orsi Seniors Cup (the World Senior Bowl), USA2 defeated Poland fairly handily, 247–178. The U.S. squad (Carolyn Lynch–Mike Passell, Roger Bates–Garey Hayden, Marc Jacobus–Eddie Wold and npc Donna Compton) faces Germany (Michael Elinescu, Ulrich Kratz, Reiner Marsal, Bernhard Strater, Ulrich Wenning, Entscho Wladow, npc Kareen Schroeder, coach Karin Wenning) in the final.

In the Bermuda Bowl, the remaining U.S. team (John Kranyak–Gavin Wolpert, Kevin Bathurst–Kevin Dwyer, Robert Levin–Steve Weinstein and npc Shane Blanchard) fell to Monaco 241.7–160, setting the stage for a Monaco–Italy battle for the world open team championship title.

The all-American Gordon team continues to advance in the World Transnational Open Teams. Playing captain Mark Gordon and company (David Berkowitz, Alan Sontag, Jacek Pszczola, Pratap Rajadhyaksha, Michael Seamon and coach Susie Miller) rallied from 33 down with a set to go to win its quarterfinal match 115–105 against Polish Students. Next up for them in the seminfinal: the White House team from the Netherlands.

In the other Transnational semifinal, Joe Grue and Brad Moss – playing on the mostly Chinese PD Times team – will play the Chinese SAIC VW squad.
