Spingold Seeds Fail to Sprout
Three of the top four seeds in the Spingold Knockout teams have been ousted, and the two seed had a rough time of it in Thursday’s round of 16 match. Nick Nickell (Ralph Katz, Bobby Levin, Steve Weinstein, Eric Rodwell, Jeff Meckstroth) came from 50 VPs in the hole at the half to win by 5 over the Assael squad (Alex Smirnov and Josef Piekarek from Germany, Mustafa Cem Tokay and Okay Gur from Istanbul, Turkey).
The mighty Monaco, defending champions in the one slot, was knocked off in the round of 32. In the round of 16, three-seed Diamond and four-seed Fleisher joined Monaco on the weed pile.
Schermer, currently the one seed (having evicted the team who evicted Monoco) is playing Joe Grue’s squad in the quarterfinal.
Second seed Nickell faces the all-Polish Bridge 24, who started the event 39th on the ladder.
Bob Hamman’s team, who eliminated Diamond on Thursday in the round of 16, is up against Andrew Gromov’s multi-national squad. Gromov has been dominant in their matches to date.
Richard Schwartz’s squad, who sent Fleisher packing on Thursday, is up against Carolyn Lynch’s team in the quarterfinal.
