Marty Chaitt 1929 - 2012

Retired Tournament Director Marty Chaitt died on Saturday at a hospital in Palm Beach FL. He was 83. Chaitt worked as a TD for more than 40 years and was a successful player, winning several regional titles and amassing nearly 5000 masterpoints.

Chaitt was born in Williamsport PA. and grew up in Elmira NY. He graduated from Syracruse University and received a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University. Started to work part-time for ACBL in the Sixties. Under Jerry Machlin, he continued to work mostly in the Mid-Atlantic area and at NABCs. Chaitt considered Machlin his "adopted father."

Chaitt retired from the U.S. Department of Energy in the late Eighties and began working full time for ACBL in 1994, retiring in 2005. Moved to Florida in 1996 and started working regional and sectional tournaments. Even after his retirement as a full-time employee, Chaitt continued to work at tournaments. Said Ellasue Chaitt, his wife: "He kept trying to retire but continued working and going to his retirement parties, first at the Orlando NABC (2010) and then at each regional and finally at his favorite sectiionals.

Chaitt is also survived by three daughters and two grandsons plus two sons, another daughter and five additional grandchildren acquired in marriage.
