USBC Determines Semifinalists Today
Eight competitors are fighting it out over 60 boards today to determine the semifinalists in the United States Bridge Championship, now in its sixth day to determine the U.S. representative to the world championships in Lille, France, in August. Bridge will be part of the 2nd World Mind Sports Games along with chess, draughts (checkers), go and xiang qi (Chinese chess).
Three of the four quarterfinal matches, all at the halfrway point at the start of play today, are close. The scores, by team captain:
John Diamond tied with George Jacobs at 127
Roger Lee ahead of Martin Fleisher 121-101
Reese Milner leading Jim Mahaffey 99-90
In the fourth match, Warren Spector and No. 1 seed Nick Nickell were tied yesterday after three sets, but Spector took the fourth stanza 67-9 to lead 153-95.
