Nickell, Diamond Join the USBC Fray
Teams captained by Nick Nickell and John Diamond, with byes to the quarterfinal round of the United States Bridge Championship, join the competition today as teams compete for the right to represent the United States in the bridge segment of the World Mind Sports Games in Lille, France, in August.
The tournament is organized by the United States Bridge Federation and is being played in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg.
Matchups for play Tuesday, by captain, are Nickell versus Warren Spector; Diamond versus George Jacobs; Martin Fleisher versus Roger Lee, and Jim Mahaffey versus Reese Milner.

In Monday's round of 16, there were four withdrawals as some of the matches turned into runaways.
The Jonathan Weinstein team withdrew with a set to go, trailing Fleisher 299-203. Larry Robbins quit after six sets against Mahaffey, down 220-91. Allan Falk dropped out at the half after falling behind Spector 256-58, and Drew Becker resigned against Jacobs after six sets, down 312-136.
In matches that went the distance, the four-member Lee team defeated Steve Robinson and company 258-233. Milner took the measure of Jeff Wolfson 284-221.
