Youth Will Be Served!
by Peggy Kaplan
Every ACBL Member, irrespective of specifics, is important and valuable to bridge. Still, all of us realize that we must especially nurture our young players. They are critical to the survival and health of our game in the coming decades.
In that spirit, the ACBL has been working diligently to help our up and coming players to attend NABC tournaments. Having fun and entertainment when not at the table is part of the Junior Program! The first Saturday in Seattle, many youth and junior players attended a reception at the Sheraton. In addition to being served tempting treats like sliders, mini-corn dogs and hot pretzels, the kids shared tales of triumph and woe.
Those joining the younger crowd included a number of Board members, including President Craig Robinson and President-elect Sharon Anderson. New CEO Robert Hartman, ACBL Bulletin Associate Editor Sue Munday, Marketing Director Vicki Campbell and Dana Norton also welcomed and visited. Roger Lee and Josh Donn shared their thoughts with the powers that be. Of course, during the reception, no one could know that these young players were about to vault into super star status with their prestigious Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pair win the next Thursday night!
McKenzie Myer, once a junior player himself, gave a talk about how to grow your game and his experiences as a youth player. “Start early!” McKenzie exhorted. His enthusiastic audience appreciated the advice, with chuckles along the way.
To all those who work tirelessly to help the next generation – thank you. Our younger crowd is great – and we look forward to watching their fine future!
