U.S. Teams Advance to Bermuda Bowl and d’Orsi Senior Bowl Finals
The young guns of USA 2 torpedoed the USA 1 team in World Championship play by a score of 217 to 157 to claim their seats in the Bermuda Bowl final. In the d’Orsi Senior Bowl, USA 2 dominated USA 1 176 to 95 to advance.
Bermuda Bowl contender USA 2 (Kevin Bathurst, Daniel Zagorin, Joe Grue, Justin Lall, Joel Wooldridge, John Hurd and npc Curtis Cheek) entered the final day of competition up 51 IMPs over USA 1 (Martin Fleisher, Mike Kamil, Robert Levin, Steve Weinstein, Chip Martel and Lew Stansby and npc Jan Martel). While USA 1 outscored USA 2 52-13 in the first segment of the day to whittle USA 2’s lead down to 12 IMPs, that was as close as it got.
In the other Bermuda Bowl semifinal match, the Netherlands upset the heavily favored Italian team in what was a tightly contested match until the last segment.
Down 176 to 95 after the fifth segment of the d’Orsi Senior Bowl match, USA 1 (Lew Finkel, Arnold Fisher, Bobby Wolff, Dan Morse, Richard Schwartz, Fred Hamilton and npc Henry Bethe) withdrew. USA 2 (Larry Kozlove, Gaylor Kasle, Peter Boyd, Steve Robinson, Neil Chambers, John Schermer and npc Donna Compton) will advance to play France, who beat Poland by a score of 197 to 196 to slip into the final.
The Venice Cup final will pit Indonesia who beat England 185 to 176, against France, who beat the Netherlands 162 to 141 to advance.
