Cohen Receives Sportsmanship Award
Ralph Cohen has been named the 2006 recipient of the Sidney H. Lazard Jr. Sportsmanship Award. The award will be presented at the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame banquet during the Summer NABC in Chicago. Cohen, of Memphis TN, is an ACBL Grand Life Master with four NABC titles. Canadian by birth, Cohen has represented native country in international play, placing fourth in the World Team Olympiad in 1964. He is a WBF International Master. Cohen was ACBL executive director from 1984--86 and has served on the ACBL and WBF Laws Commissions.
The award was established by Sidney Lazard in honor of his son, Sidney Jr., who died in 1999 after a year-long battle with cancer at the age of 41. Administrated by the ACBL Educational Foundation, the award is limited to top players --- those who have finished in the top four places in major national contests. Lazard said that its object is to "enhance sportsmanship among the top players" and salute those who "win with class and dignity."
