Let the Games Begin!
by Peggy Kaplan
For most, the Spring NABC in Louisville started with a regional event or charity game on Thursday, with the Big Kahuna NABC events premiering on Friday. Yet, for a very few select competitors, those who qualified within their ACBL districts, the fun started on Wednesday.
After two qualifying sessions on Thursday the final 28 pairs began to battle for the title. Among them were one mixed pair, one ladies pair taking on the guys, and two Bridge Bulletin editors. For those who think that Brent Manley and Dave Smith only write about the game – well guess again!
Kibitzing were a few of the finest players in the world: Kit Woolsey and Bobby Levin who stopped to observe. Shane Blanchard had a world champ watching his every move – Mom, Jill Levin.
Friday, scores of players from around the world will convene to do battle. But, Thursday, in one room, these 56 players were vying for the first national title of 2011.
And – in NAP Flight A, 2011, youth reigns! The crown goes to Joe Grue and Shane Blanchard. Guess Bobby Levin and proud mamma, Jill Levin, know how to pick ‘em! Excellent runners up are Joel Wooldridge and Kevin Bathurst. Congratulations to all!
