One Club, Many Winners

by Jeanni Blume

The Ace Of Clubs Award goes to the player who wins the most masterpoints playing in clubs during a calendar year. There are awards for each of various masterpoint categories. Four of the national winners play in our Pompano Beach (FL) Bridge Club — time for a party.

On Feb. 11, we honored these winners: Helen Shanbrom (10,000 plus masterpoints category), Edith Denenberg (7500 to 10,000), Bella Ionis-Sorren (2500 to 5000) and Ken Wagner (300 to 500). Shelly Salvi was second nationally in the 7500–10,000 category and we honored her as well.

How do they do it? Besides playing well, they’re nice people and others stand in line to get to play with them.

Helen has won her category 19 times out of the past 22 years. Each year she says she won’t try again to win — it’s enough. The other day she came to me and said: “Guess who’s ahead for January?” It was Helen, of course.

Because she’s won the event so many times (and contributed so much to bridge), we are campaigning to have the competition named for her. The Helen Shanbrom Ace of Clubs Award — it has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?
