Gene Britton Celebrates Century Mark
by Grady Fuller
Friends of Gene Britton celebrated her 100th Birthday at a bridge game party given in her honor on Jan. 24. For Gene, the Monday game at the YMCA in Fort Worth TX is a standing date with her favorite partner Steve Shirey. Gene’s daughter-in-law, Becky Britton, presented a framed proclamation, signed by Texas Governor Rick Perry, to Gene congratulating her on the century mark.
Many players brought home prepared dishes and the party began well before noon. The usual number of tables is about 10, but this game drew 19, indicative of her many friends. There were so many cards and gifts that they had to be removed before the game could begin. Cameras were blinking so much that one would think a movie starlet was being interviewed. There were so many well wishers that Gene could hardly get out another “thank you.”
We love Gene for many reasons, but especially for her graciousness, wit, competitive spirit, patience and willingness to learn. She is a legend for her humorous stories, often about herself. These marvelous attributes have contributed to her longevity. She is our Icon of Bridge in Fort Worth and a lovable, spirited competitor who we hope continues to play for many more years.
