LA Times Reinstates Stewart Column
The Los Angeles Times, inundated with complaints after announcing in November that the daily bridge column was being discontinued, reinstated the column as of Jan. 10.
Stewart, who shared the news with the ACBL, said more than 1000 Times readers telephoned or e-mailed the newspaper to protest the decision. The newspaper said initially that a survey showed low readership for the syndicated column, a feature in the Times for more than 50 years. Stewart, who had been assisting Alfred Sheinwold with the column, took it over after Sheinwold's death in 1997.
On Friday, this message was posted on the newspaper's Readers' Representative Journal, a blog:
"Good news for Bridge fans: The daily Bridge column is coming back.
"Starting Monday, it will be back in its old home, on the first Comics page.
"The Times has been bombarded with e-mails, letters and calls from disappointed readers since the column was discontinued on Nov. 29."
