Youth Play First Tournament
by Barbara Reid
Bridge Haven, a club located in St. Louis MO, hosted a tournament for youth who are taking bridge lessons at their school — Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School. Their bridge instructor is Phyllis Siegel and the school teacher at MISLCDS is Nancy Pierson. The youngsters played in their first tournament on Sunday, Dec.19, at Bridge Haven.
All the players were winners, but first place went to Sam Frank and Jean Fox. Nathan Huang and Terri Leamy finished in second place.
All the students joined ACBL as Junior members. Their bridge coaches are: Jay Shah, Laura Tyrey, Jean Fox and Terri Leamy.
At the end of the tournament, Bridge Haven, owner Chuck Starovasnik told the students they could play on weekends in 2011 at Bridge Haven for free.
“We want to do all we can to promote bridge for youth,” says Starovasnik, “so we will see if this helps get more kids to the bridge table.”
