More than a Club
by Bonnie Segers
In November 2009, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. To support my fight with cancer, my bridge club, the Birmingham (AL) Duplicate Bridge Club, decided to help with my yearly charity drive. Every year, I crochet scarves for needy people in Birmingham, and then donate my scarves the week before Christmas.
This year, members of my club made more than 100 handmade scarves, each with a label that says, “Bonnie’s Scarves.” These were displayed at the annual Christmas party and then donated to a local charity. Throughout the year, I have also received multiple cards and calls from the members of the club to see how I was doing. They have made me feel loved and cared for in this difficult time, and it has proven to me that a bridge club is not just a place to play cards, but also a community of friends.
