A Season For Giving
by Pete Klebofski
I have collected for the 2nd Harvest Food Bank and Toys for Tots for several years. This year, Unit 498 (the Bayshore Bridge Club in Burlingame CA) got involved. Unit members were given two donation options: Bring in a toy and/or food product or make a cash donation to either charity. Each week, a volunteer would collect the monies and go shopping for the specific charity.
Here are the results. Toys for Tots: Six crates of toys or about three times the number shown in the photo. 2nd Harvest Food Bank: Two and one-half barrels of food. The estimated donations to date are $4500 for Toys for Tots and $2000 for 2nd Harvest Food Bank. This is a great achievement for the size of our club and a fun morale builder.
At one of our Monday Night games, two members went together and offered to match any monies collected by the group. Although the game was only five tables, about $250 was collected and with the matching funds, we raised a little more than $500.
This drive has been a great experience. I’ve noticed that some of the post game bidding conversations have been replaced by “There is a great toy sale this weekend!” or “What do you think of this idea?” It has been fun watching members hug the stuffed animals and peek through the pile of toys. There is clearly a child in all of us — how nice to see it come out.
