Anglo-American Squad Takes World Senior Title
On day 11 of the world championships in Philadelphia, the Anglo-American team captained by Paul Hackett won the World Senior Knockout Teams (the Rand Cup), defeating Team Markowicz in the final 155-83. For three members of the team — Hackett, John Holland and Gunnar Hallberg of England — it was the second Senior world title in a row. They won an equivalent event in Sao Paulo, Brazil, last year. They were joined in Philadelphia by Americans Garey Hayden and Reese Milner.
In the World Open Knockout Teams (the Rosenblum Cup), three ACBL squads remain in the contest. The semifinal matches are set: Zimmermann (France/Italy /Norway) v. Diamond (U.S.) and Wolfson (U.S./Israel) v. Nickell (U.S.). In Monday’s action, Zimmermann dispatched Strul 116-69; Diamond topped Vito 143-26, the latter withdrawing after three sets; Wolfson beat Fleisher 108-92 and Nickell routed Robinson 132-65.
Today’s World Women’s Knockout Teams final (the McConnell Cup) will pit the China Ladies against the Netherlands. China beat Fireman (U.S.) 137-96, and the Dutch women defeated Hampton (U.S.), who withdrew after three sets trailing 133-36.
