Hot Time in Hot Springs Village

Submitted by Ned and Cathy Irving and Ginna DeThomas

The Village Card Club in Hot Springs Village, AR is one of ACBL’s largest. The club recently sponsored Unit 161's first 299er Sectional Tournament. They had 301 tables who came from eight states and tried several things that were well-received. They advertised and heavily recruited 0–5 masterpoint players, with the lure that they could play for free. There were two sessions per day of games just for them. A hallway was dedicated to pictures of winners. They enjoyed seeing their photos in the hallway and others enjoyed seeing who the winners were. It was exciting to see 85-year old players squealing with glee, and giving each other high fives. They recognized many of the players in other ways and more than 100 trophies were given.

Having a successful tournament depends on a large number of volunteers to contribute their time. Life masters were recruited to serve as daily tournament workers so all 299ers would be able to play.

One of the players challenged the club to recycle plastic bottles used during the tournament. He brought containers for each room, and personally emptied them between sessions. This is the first time this has been done in a tournament in their area.

A dose of the famous Hot Springs Village hospitality was administered: free coffee, bottled water and tons of home made cookies, desert breads and other tasty items.
