U.S. Takes Gold in Bermuda Bowl, Silver in Venice Cup

At the 2009 World Bridge Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil, USA2 defeated Italy in the final of the Bermuda Bowl, 285.33–249. This makes the 18th time the U.S. has captured the gold medal in the prestigious contest, first played in 1950.

Playing for USA2 were Nick Nickell, Ralph Katz, Jeff Meckstroth, Eric Rodwell, Bob Hamman and Zia Mahmood. The non-playing captain was Donna Compton and the coach was Eric Kokish. This is the first time Zia Mahmood and Ralph Katz have won a world championship. Their teammates have won on multiple occasions.

The Italian lineup was Giorgio Duboin, Fulvio Fantoni, Lorenzo Lauria, Claudio Nunes, Antonio Sementa and Alfredo Versace.

In the Women’s Team Championship (the Venice Cup), USA1 lost to China in the final 220–148. This is the first time China has captured a gold medal at the World Bridge Championships.

Playing for China were Yongling Dong, Yi Qian Liu, Ming Sun, Hongli Wang, Wenfei Wang and Ru Yan. The lineup for USA1 was Lynn Baker, Lynn Deas, Irina Levitina, Karen McCallum, Beth Palmer, Kerri Sanborn and npc Sam Dinkin.

In the playoff for the Bronze medal in the Venice Cup, USA1 lost to France 139.5–93. The USA1 roster was Connie Goldberg, Renee Mancuso, Shawn Quinn, Jo Ann Sprung, Peggy Sutherlin, Pam Wittes and npc Danny Sprung. In the d'Orsi Senior Bowl, Indonesia beat USA2 (David Berkowitz, Dan Gerstman, Mark Lair, Carolyn Lynch, Mike Passell, John Sutherlin and npc Lisa Berkowitz) 125–77 for the bronze medal.
