U.S. Teams Advance in World Championships
Four ACBL squads have advanced to the semifinal round of their respective categories in the 2009 World Bridge Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
In the Open Team Championship (the Bermuda Bowl), USA2 (Nick Nickell, Ralph Katz, Jeff Meckstroth, Eric Rodwell, Bob Hamman, Zia Mahmood, npc Donna Compton, coach Eric Kokish) finished fourth in the seven-day round-robin qualifying round, and defeated the Netherlands 214–200 in a head-to-head match in the quarterfinal round.
USA2 will face China in the semifinal round.
In the Women’s Team Championship (the Venice Cup), both U.S. squads qualified in the round-robin phase and defeated their respective quarterfinal opponents. USA1 (Lynn Baker, Lynn Deas, Irina Levitina, Karen McCallum, Beth Palmer, Kerri Sanborn and npc Sam Dinkin) finished third in the round-robin and beat Spain in the quarterfinal 189–139. USA2 (Connie Goldberg, Renee Mancuso, Shawn Quinn, Jo Ann Sprung, Peggy Sutherlin, Pam Wittes and npc Danny Sprung) finished fourth in the qualifier, and defeated Germany in the quarterfinal round 258–210.
The U.S. women’s squads will play each other in the semifinal.
In the d'Orsi Senior Bowl, USA1 finished fourth in the round-robin phase, while USA2 finished fifth. The teams met each other for their quarterfinal match, and USA2 prevailed 222.67–161. USA1’s lineup: Arnie Fisher, Fred Hamilton, Dan Morse, John Solodar, Paul Swanson, Bobby Wolff and npc Betty Ann Kennedy. USA2’s roster: David Berkowitz, Dan Gerstman, Mark Lair, Carolyn Lynch, Mike Passell, John Sutherlin and npc Lisa Berkowitz. USA2 squares off against Poland in the semifinal.
