Hope Wins Out
"Hope is stronger than a hurricane" was the theme of an ad on television during the aftermath of Katrina. The Mississippi Gulf Shores Bridge Association (Unit 180) was proud of its bridge club, located one-half block from the Gulf of Mexico. That was until Katrina and her 30-foot storm surge smashed the clubhouse, leaving nothing but a concrete slab and one twisted girder.
A building was destroyed, but not people's spirit. While rebuilding, the members continued to play bridge. They gathered in churches, homes and other buildings.
Now, the club has reopened with a beautiful, new building. In June, a sectional tournament was held, and 198 tables came to play and to celebrate the rebirth.
Don't ever underestimate hope.
