Robinson, Fleisher Vie For USA 1 Slot
The squads led by Steve Robinson and Martin Fleisher won their respective USA 1 semifinal matches, and will square off against each other for the title of USA 1. The winning team will represent the U.S. in the Bermuda Bowl in Sao Paulo, Brazil, starting Aug. 29.
Fleisher (Kamil, Ekeblad-Weichsel, Granovetter-Rubin) enjoyed a 77-IMP lead going into the final quarter of their semifinal match against Nick Nickellís squad. Nickell mounted a furious rally, outscoring Fleisher 86-16 over the final 30 boards, but it was not enough. Fleisher hung on to win by 7 IMPs.
Robinson (Boyd, Doub-Wildavsky, Stewart-Woolsey) took an early lead in their semifinal contest against Roy Wellandís team. Welland was unable to catch up, and Robinson went on to win the match by 17 IMPs.
The USA 1 winner will be joined in Sao Paulo by the winner of the USA 2 bracket.
In the USA2 bracket, Welland will play Aubrey Strulís team, while Nickell will play the George Jacobs squad in a 60-board match. The winners of each contest will play a 90-board semi-final match starting on Sunday, with the winner of that match playing the losing USA1 finalist for the right to be USA2 in Sao Paulo.
The tournament is being run in White Plains NY by the United States Bridge Federation.
