Upsets Mark USBC Round of 16

Four of the five matches in the round of 16 in the United States Bridge Championship ended in upsets as the competition to select two teams for the 2009 Bermuda Bowl continues in White Plains NY.

The tournament is being run by the United States Bridge Federation.

In the round of 16, only the Rose Meltzer team avoided the upset bug, prevailing over Arch McKellar 138-75. In the other four matches, the lower-seeded teams were victorious. The results, by captain: Bruce Rogoff over John Diamond 91-84; Melih Ozdil over George Jacobs 128-84; Martin Fleisher over Gary Cohler 127-113, and Steve Robinson over Aubrey Strul 111-94.

The winner of the competition will be USA 1 in the Bermuda Bowl in Sao Paulo, Brazil, starting Aug. 29. A second team will be selected when the loser of the final plays the team that emerges from the match between losing semifinalists.
