Mancuso Earns Venice Cup Berth
The team captained by Renee Mancuso broke open a close match in the third set, winning 40-1, and cruised to victory over the Joann Glasson squad 226--143 in the United States Women's Bridge Championship playoff. Mancuso and company will play in the Venice Cup in Sao Paulo, Brazil, later in the year as USA 2.
The tournament took place in Sacramento CA and was organized by the United States Bridge Federation.
Mancuso lost in the USWBC final but took advantage of their second chance in facing Glasson, who defeated the Sylvia Moss squad in the match between losing semifinalists.
After two sets, Mancuso led Glasson 76--71 before their huge third set, and they continued to build on the lead for the rest of the match.
The lineups for Sao Paulo are as follows:
USA 1 -- Sam Dinkin (non-playing captain), Lynn Baker, Karen McCallum, Kerrie Sanborn, Irina Levitina, Lynn Deas and Beth Palmer.
USA 2 -- Mancuso, Peggy Sutherlin, Shawn Quinn, Pam Wittes, Connie Goldberg and JoAnn Sprung.
Trials for the open teams (Bermuda Bowl) will take place in White Plains NY starting June 5. Senior team trials will take place in Las Vegas NV starting July 6. Two teams will be selected from each of the trials to compete in Sao Paulo.
