World Championship Enters Semifinal Round
Two ACBL squads have advanced to the semifinal round of the World Bridge Games in Beijing. In the Women’s contest, the U.S. will face China in its semifinal bracket, while in the Senior’s division, the U.S. will play Egypt.
The U.S. Open squad – Nick Nickell, Richard Freeman, Jeff Meckstroth, Eric Rodwell, Bob Hamman, Chris Compton and non-playing captain Donna Compton – lost in the Round of 16 to Poland, 127-100.
The Canadian Seniors also lost in the Round of 16, falling to Hungary 150-97. The Canadian lineup included Bill Bowman, John Bowman, Stephen Brown, Jurek Czyzowicz, Douglas Fraser, Ed Zaluski and npc Sandra Fraser.
The U.S. Women (Mildred Breed, Marinesa Letizia, Sylvia Moss, Judi Radin, Janice Seamon-Molson, Tobi Sokolow and npc Sue Picus) won their Round-of-16 match against Spain, 161-73. They were also victorious in their quarterfinal battle with Denmark. The U.S. won 200-176.
The U.S. Seniors (Grant Baze, Billy Eisenberg, Russ Ekeblad, Matthew Granovetter, Sam Lev, Reese Milner and npc Jacek Pszczola) prevailed in the Round of 16, beating Belgium 139-82. They won again in the quarterfinal, stopping Hungary 222-198.
In the Youth contest, a Canadian and a U.S. squad emerged from the round-robin phase of the Under 26 category, but both teams lost their quarterfinal match. In the Under 21 category, a U.S. team also survived the round-robin, but was also eliminated in the quarterfinal round.
