Europe Thumps USA in Buffett Cup
Twelve of Europe’s top players ended the second Buffett Bridge Cup on Thursday with a 205.5–172.5 victory over a dozen of USA’s top players.
The event was played in Louisville KY, site of golf’s Ryder Cup, after which the bridge match was modeled.
The first Buffett Cup, played in Dublin, Ireland, in 2006, was won by the USA, also in convincing fashion.
The European winners this year are Boye Brogeland, Espen Lindqvist, Jan Peter Svendsen and Tor Helness, Norway; Michel and Thomas Bessis, France; Hugh McGann and Tom Hanlon, Ireland; Michal Kwiecien, Jasek Pszczola, Poland; Sabine Auken, Germany, and Marion Michielsen, Netherlands. Paul Hackett was captain.
Their opponents in the four-day match were Dick Freeman, Alan Sontag, Tobi Sokolow, Janice Seamon-Molson, Howard Weinstein, Geoff Hampson, Bob Hamman, David Berkowitz, Bjorn Fallenius, Roy Welland, Steve Garner and Zia Mahmood. Donna Compton was captain.
The tournament featured three formats – pairs, teams and an individual. In the pairs, USA and Europe played even at 60 championship points each. USA won the teams competition 66.5–59.5. In the individual, Europe had a big edge at 86–46.

The next Buffett Bridge Cup, played prior to the Ryder Cup, will take place in Wales in 2010.
