Mahaffey Leads Qualifiers in USBC

The team captained by Jim Mahaffey led the qualifiers from the first round-robin phase of the United States Bridge Championship as the tournament moved into the second round-robin Thursday. The winning team will earn the right to represent the United States in the World Mind Sports Games in Beijing, China, this fall in the event formerly known as the World Bridge Team Olympiad.

The USBC will conclude on June 6. It is being played in Palm Beach Gardens FL concurrent with a regional.

Notable among the non-qualifiers after the first round-robin were teams captained by Rose Meltzer and Lou Ann O’Rourke.

Eleven of the 16 teams in the second round-robin will advance to the round of 16. Three teams in the USBC – those captained by Aubrey Strul, Nick Nickell and George Jacobs – have byes, Strul and Nickell to the round of eight and Jacobs to the round of 16.
