USBC in Semifinal Stage
Members of the Nick Nickell team, observing from the sidelines while they enjoyed their bye, are now in the thick of the United States Bridge Championship, nearing its conclusion in Schaumburg IL. Nickell and company begin play today against the team captained by Seymon Deutsch, 269-243 winners over the Rose Meltzer squad in yesterday's quarterfinal matches.
The other semifinal matchup pits Russ Ekeblad against Richard Schwartz.
The winner of the USBC earns the right to represent the U.S. as team No. 2 in the Bermuda Bowl this fall in Shanghai. The George Jacobs team qualified last year as the No. 1 team.
Ekeblad made the round of four by dispatching the Martin Harris squad, who withdrew early, trailing 291-174. Schwartz defeated the Lou Ann O'Rourke squad 286-235.
In the playoff to determine a second U.S. team for the Venice Cup, the squad captained by Shawn Quinn defeated the Kathleen Sulgrove team to join Hansa Narasimhan as the two U.S. teams competing in Shanghai.
