Trials Nearing Final Stages

Six teams were battling on Wednesday for berth in the semifinal round of the United States Bridge Championship, under way in Schaumburg IL. The winners of the three matches will be joined in the semifinal by the Nick Nickell squad, which had a bye to the round of four.

Leaders at the halfway point in the three quarterfinal matches were, by captain, Russ Ekeblad (186-81 over Martin Harris), Richard Schwartz (120-91 over Lou Ann O'Rourke) and Seymon Deutsch (131-122 over Rose Meltzer).

The winner of the USBC will be the second team to represent the U.S. in the Bermuda Bowl in Shanghai, China, later this year. The George Jacobs qualified last year as the first team.

In the U.S. Women's Bridge Championship, the Hansa Narasimhan team is in as the No. 1 representative to the Venice Cup in Shanghai. Teams captained by Shawn Quinn and Kathleen Sulgrove are in a playoff to determine the second U.S. team.
