No trip to Atlanta is complete without a visit
to the legendary
Fox Theatre. Take a step back in time at the showplace of the nation
where entertainers have performed for eight decades. Originally
the Yaarab Temple Shrine Mosque, it was designed in the late 1920's
as headquarters for the 5,000-member Shriners organization. To
generate additional funding, the Shriners worked out a deal with
movie mogul William Fox, who at that time was building movie "palaces" in
Detroit, St. Louis, Brooklyn and San Francisco. The Fox still
stands today as a fiercely protected landmark and a nationally acclaimed
theater with almost 4,000 seats. Follow the lead of experienced tour
guides and explore the Great Stage, one of the largest indoor performance
spaces in the world and the various ornate ballrooms and restrooms
(yes they are historic and have furniture worth tens of thousands
of dollars). The stage's hydraulic system and Moller organ are still
in operation since the 20s. And as an exciting climax to the Stage
Door Tour, guests will tour and have tea and cake at the historic
Georgian Terrace Hotel across the street.
