The Goren Trophy
by Peggy Kaplan
Steve Garner did not add yet another national title to his resume. He did, however, get awfully close to one more skin.
Roy Welland and Steve led the field the first day of the Life Master Pairs, ending up third overall. Along with partner Howie Weinstein and teammates Christal Henner-Welland, Alexander Smirnov and Josef Piekarek, Steve and Roy again captured the #3 spot in the Open Board a Match. Partner Michael Whitman and Steve finished in the middle of the overalls in the Blue Ribbon Pairs. Then, the last 3 days of the tournament, Steve and Company came within a hair of capturing the Reisinger. When the smoke cleared, they were 2nd, less than half a board away from a win.
What happens when you add up all the platinum points from those four events? You end up with a new title for Steve: the winner of the Goren Trophy. This prestigious title is bestowed upon the player who wins the most masterpoints in national events at the Fall NABC.
With his unique combination of grace, humor, panache and bridge talent, Steve has garnered an award for which he is most deserving.
