Hall of Fame – 2010 New Orleans
by Peggy Kaplan
More than a few times, this was my silent prayer: “Please Lord. Let it be no worse than average-minus.” Alas – too often against Dave Berkowitz and Larry Cohen, average-minus was an unrealized dream.
Looking at their record, I am quite certain I am not alone.
Thursday night, ACBL’s Hall of Fame welcomed Dave Berkowitz into the fold. With 25 NABC titles and over 30,000 masterpoints, Dave is a most worthy addition. Aptly, the person with whom Dave won many of those titles presented him with his honor: Larry Cohen. Dana Berkowitz entertained the audience with tales of living with two stars, Dave and mom Lisa.
In addition to Dave’s award, Cecil Cook presented Tom Stoddard the Blackwood Award, and Dan Morse presented Paul Hodge the von Zedtwitz Award.
The Sidney H. Lazard Jr. Award for Sportsmanship went to the quite deserving Roy Welland. As good friend Zia presented Roy with this honor, champion wife Christal and bridge-playing sons beamed.
A cavalcade of teammates and champs, friends and family celebrated the honorees special night. Congratulations to Dave and Roy for their major contributions to our game!
