|Back to Houston|
Names like Hamman, Zia, Meckstroth, Rodwell, Passell and a few others are familiar to tournament bridge players everywhere. The stars of our universe, they glitter from above.
Yet, rising stars are in the making – especially at a NABC! Wednesday evening, March 18th, the Roaming Reporter wandered into one of many superb Celebrity Speaker sessions. There, Canadian expert Barry Harper entertained and informed a large audience of IN (intermediate-newcomer) competitors on the wisdom of hand evaluation.
Among those delighting in the talk were Renae and Tim White. From Mercer Island, WA, these thirty-something year participants in social bridge decided to "take the plunge" into duplicate last August. "Tournaments are so exciting!" friends told them. Thus, Boston’s NABC was their destination in November. After a fabulous time there, Houston’s NABC had to be on their schedule. After their start in August, the Whites are thrilled to have over 54 masterpoints! Six of them are gold – and they were earned in Houston. "We are here for GOLD!" say the Whites!
Other pumped-up rising stars herald from Rochester, MN and Mooresville, NC. Keith Anderson and sister Mary Anderson along with Joan Maxwell and William Taylor won Flights A, B and C in the Tuesday Evening 299ER Swiss Teams. Their score of 99 far outpaced the 74 victory points earned by their closest competitors. All one need do is look at the smiles on their faces to see how much they love this game.
For those who have not yet attended any Celebrity Speaker series at an NABC, consider doing so. You, too, could enhance your game, be grabbing titles – and perhaps one day find your name among those known to bridge players around the world!
