Verbeek first in Jacoby Open Swiss
The squad captained by Tim Verbeek captured first place in the Jacoby Open Swiss Teams with 119.87 VP, ahead of Team Lavazza, the runners-up, who posted 113.79 VP. Playing for the Verbeek team are Bob Drijver, Dano De Falco, Patricia Cayne, captain Tim Verbeek (kneeling), Bart Nab and Danny Molenaar.
Second in the Jacoby Open Swiss Teams was Team Lavazza: captain Norberto Bocchi, Antonio Sementa, Augustin Madala, Giorgio Duboin, Alejandro Bianchedi and Dennis Bilde.
Led by Li, “Chinese Hope” wins Women’s Swiss
“Chinese Hope” won the Machlin Women’s Swiss Teams Sunday night, edging out Loretta Rivers’s squad by almost 5 victory points.
The winners, are Yujie, Li Yiting, Xia Mei, Liu Shuoyan, Wang Wei and coach Jianjian Wang. This is the third NABC title for Li, of Herndon VA, but the first for each of her teammates, from Shanghai.
Chinese Hope finished with 117.71 VP, while Rivers scored 112.75 VP
Second in the Machlin Women’s Swiss Teams: Sandra Rimstedt, captain Loretta Rivers, Cecilia Rimstedt, Nina Taselaar and Ida Groenkvist.
Oshlag, Dahl blow past field in Fast Pairs
Richard Oshlag and Mark Dahl convincingly won the NABC Fast Pairs by a margin of more than three boards. Oshlag, of Memphis TN, and Dahl, of Richmond VA, qualified third in the opening round and scored almost 69% in the first final session—they had 23 plus scores in the set – to take a commanding lead in the contest. This is the second NABC victory for the winners. Their first occurred as teammates in the Senior Swiss Teams in 2011.
Second in the NABC Fast Pairs: Dave Westfall of Spokane WA and Stan Christie of Kirkland WA.
Meckstroth wins Mott-Smith Trophy
Jeff Meckstroth earned 400 masterpoints at the NABC in Kansas City to capture the Mott-Smith trophy, awarded annually to the player who earns the most masterpoints at the spring tournament.
Meckstroth earned 250 points for his win in the Vanderbilt and 150 for his second-place finish in the Kay Platinum Pairs.
